In Byzantine art, and later Eastern Orthodox art generally, the Deësis or Deisis (Greek: δέησις), "prayer" or "supplication"), is a traditional iconic representation of Christ in Majesty or Christ Pantocrator: enthroned, carrying a book, and flanked by the Virgin Mary and St. John the Baptist, and sometimes other saints and angels. Mary and John are shown facing towards Christ with their hands raised in supplication on behalf of humanity. Condition: genuine painting film. Provenance: private collection Germany.

According to a legend the twelve apostles were present at the moment Mother of God died: Peter and Paul († ca. 67), Simon Zelotes, Philip (1st C), Evangelist John the Theologian († early 2nd C.), Holy Apostle (of the Seventy) and Evangelist Luke (1st C), Evangelist Matthew († 60), James son of Zebedee († 44), Holy Apostle (of the Seventy) and Evangelist Mark († 63), Andrew the First-Called († 62). Also Hieromartyr Dionysius the Areopagite, Bishop of Athens and Apostle [of the Seventy, † 96] and Hieromartyr Hierotheos the Bishop of Athens [Ierofey, 1st C.] on sides. Mother of God Ovsepetaya (the All-praised), Russian Icon, 18th century, 31 x 26.5 cm, € 1300,-

The Mother of God, in half-figure, is holding in her left arm the seated Christ. She is wearing a richly adorned maphorion that has a wide hem on which the inscriptions ''Oh, you most saintly of all saints, who hath given birth to Christ the Word.'' are displayed. The maphorion is decorated with blankets of clouds. In Russian icon-painting tradition, this iconography is known from the 17th century, and the earliest depiction of the all-hymned Mother has been found on several pages of Syrian face icon-painting original of 17th century.
